Democratic inclusion in the European Union is the topic of this first webinar, thanks to the EDPA-EEP project. Inclusion is still an issue that must be fully implemented and pursued. There are still too many gaps, especially regarding the inclusion of the participation of deaf people in the political context, despite the EU’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
This webinar goes some way to highlight the importance of the Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030, adopted in March 2021 by the European Commission.
The topic of this webinar is primarily to give accessible information to European deaf citizens about the upcoming European elections in 2024 and secondly to illustrate the processes of political participation of some deaf people both at the national and European level, highlighting the low percentage of deaf people active in political participation, precisely because of the numerous obstacles resulting from the lack of democratic inclusion and accessibility adequate for deaf people. Regarding the second aspect, it is targeted to the general public, especially to politically revealing actors, with the hope to be able to guarantee already now, given the upcoming European elections in 2024, full accessibility to the political life of deaf European citizens, both for voters and future deaf candidates. Ensuring and realising this accessibility for deaf people strengthens a more inclusive democracy.
